WEEKEND AT BARNEYS

This was a very eventful, albeit poorly documented weekend--but I'd venture to say it was a great success, although our dear friend Douglas might characterize it as being 'Gorgeous!'. Our sincerest thanks to Douglas, Moira, Jennifur, Chris, the cast of Shockheaded Peter, Colin, Peter, Joe, Lauren, Bess, Russell, Bryan, John, Beth, Adam, Meredith, Sean, Silver Ali, Lisa, Michelle, Amy, Vanessa, Nick, Steve, The Algonquin, Chez Josephine, United Noodles, DiRoberti's, Supper, Patrick, ABCNews's phone inquiries, Mr. Depp's Almanack Fever, the kind staff of Barneys, the curious shoppers, and everyone else who made this weekend a wonderful experience!

The Algonquin: our room, which adjoined the Dorothy Parker Suite. Note that the boutonnieres were kept in cryogenic stasis upon the air conditioning vent, which worked very well. The interview in the lobby on Saturday morning went without a hitch, and Patrick turned out to be a sharp, well-spoken lad.

Shots from Barneys. My linene detachable collars worked well, but my custom designed cloth detachable was my pride and joy. It worked especially well with an improvised knot of mine that is akin to a Prince Albert, but has a sort of askew lip towards the bottom of the knot, which to my mind gives the appearance of a wildflower's slim calyx. The Saturday morning interview in the Algonquin lobby was good fun as well, and I look forward to seeing the final edit.

Twelve signed copies were left at Barneys for those who were unable to make it this weekend.

(Special congratulations to Douglas, Moira and especially Jennifur for her literary triumph--she knows of which we speak!)

W

You all look fabulous!

I am envious at your opportunity to see Shockheaded Peter. I saw the Tiger Lillies Halloween weekend and they were incredible. I can only imagine what that production must be like.

Lovely pictures! Thank you for documenting it for your readers.
I have a cousin who's a window-dresser at Barneys New York in Miami. He occasionally goes on jaunts to other locales; I believe his latest one was to Atlanta for the grand opening of their new store there.

I've no idea, but I will ask the next time I speak with him. His name is Ryan (maybe Simon knows him?) I will also recommend your book to him. I think it's right up his alley.

Well put, since "Gorgeous!" Is Douglas' favorite word.

My favorite pieces were the hand-blown glass specimen vitrines. And the ostrich necks that he gets from a friend who owns an ostrich farm.

That is to say, very, very low lighting; but then, no one would see my carefully designed collar!

It sounds - and looks! - as though you had a fabulous time indeed, dearest Whimsy. I wish I could have been there!

But I will be in New York for the last week-end of May, and have already purchased my tickets for "Shockheaded Peter." The original stories upon which it is based were the inspiration and source of my new icons, in a (terribly un-) interesting sidenote! I also hope to finally purchase a copy of your book while I'm there, since I received your missive too late to do so when last I was in Austin.

Yours perpetually,
M.

I've been enjoying your lovely icons of late.

I do indeed have some signed copies I'd left behind at the DL&Co. display. If they sell out, I will attempt to replenish them!

I'm quite pleased to hear that!

I will most certainly keep my fingers crossed in hopes that there's a copy left when I get there!

Friday was a bit quiet, but Saturday absolutely wore me to the nib--we had customers calling Barneys to have me inscribe a book to them before I'd left, and ABC called to see when I would be there. I'd also heard from my agents that there has been interest from film and tv lately.

What a lively stupor of an atmosphere in a retail store.

One doesn't see that at say Bergdorf Goodman.

I'm glad you found my boyfriend sweet and sharp. I think he is, too. I was going to be his assistant on Saturday, but I had to spend the day coughing and watching the boob tube because of an end-of-the-semester virus. Sorry to have missed it, looks like a grand time. Is that Lady Pinkwater in the pictures? Very cute.

Hello, Kate--so sorry to hear you were feeling unwell. Yes, you should be proud to know that Patrick apparently has a wide appeal!

That is indeed Her Pinkness. Like your dashing beau, my beloved also seems to have a wide appeal.

Looks like it was the classy event that I expected. What a lovely bric-a-brac!

The third consecutive picture of the marvelous Lady Pinkwater is a beautiful portrait!

Do I see you without a tie on the second picture? I know it was in your room, but what a surprise.

Agree. I was not blaming you, anyway. I (almost) never wear a tie. :)

I want this for my daughter (I'm kidding, of course - I'm broke):

That table is just perfect for it. What is it, exactly?

I know--I've been meaning to post a larger palette of outfits, since people are beginning to see me as some sort of reenactor or nostalgia monger. I tend to wear street ensembles that cut a bit of dash without being too formal, but for readings or appearances I take on a more concentrated form; a ceremonial cast to give my presence more resonance, much like how clergy might before a sermon.

I adored this piece, too--reminded me of Joseph Cornell. The table's wood wasn't as reddish in person. My guess it is walnut or oak. To be honest, I'm not sure where it came from, since Douglas procures from so many sources (and he has a network of procurers who were bringing items to the store from flea markets downtown). Why, he even has a contact who owns an ostrich farm that supplies him with skeletons to mount and sell--whereas I just have the woods outside of my town.

Sorry, my question was not clear. "What is it?" was about the bird, actually. It's some sort of parrot, apparently, with jewels. It would deserve a larger view.

The table is beautiful too, though. My guess is also walnut tree, or wild cherry tree. I can't believe that no one hit the table and smashed the glass belljar.

Those who see you as "some sort of reenactor or nostalgia monger" have not read your Continuity vs. Nostalgia essay. But I understand the need of being dressed in a less formal way in everyday's life, even for a true dandy like you (I mean, not like the morons at dandyism.net).

Oops--my apologies. I haven't had much success determining the exact species: so many green parrots!

I think you may agree that dandyism is a frame of mind rather than a means by which to be congratulated for buying an expensive suit. If it was just about clothes, it wouldn't be nearly as compelling; it would be just like any other banal pastime in which middle-aged straight men obsessively engage, like refurbishing old cars, reenacting civil war battles or comparing sports stats.

It was so wonderful seeing you both! I hope next time i'm in NY to stay at the Algonquin at your suggestion. Your photos of the boutique are especially wonderful, and i'll post a link to mine in an LJ entry soon, so you can view yourselves in all your dashingly elegant glory. I'm going to read Moira's edition of your tomb after she's kindly put it down. And thank you for the words of congrat's. I'm back in Los Angeles now after such a fun, whirlwind weekend of too many cocktails, and now must get back to thick spectacles and quick moving typing fingers.

Stay lovely! Much adoration, J.

Glad you are home and safe, Jennifur! I wish we had better pictures of everyone, but we only have the 'one eyelid down' variety. We had such a wonderful time with you all; your kindness and generosity are simply overwhelming.

Best of luck with the book! We hope to see you soon.

I'll say she's more of a 'natural' than I am at this whole elegance thing. I lack the looks and lanky frame to pull off the debonair leading man look, which is why I poke a little fun at myself with my outfits.
