NEON BAY

Visited my old hometown recently to see old friends, and took photos of some of the old neon signs that have become local landmarks. Can't imagine the place without neon lobsters.

What sort of textures did you grow up with?

In Trinidad... hmmm there's so many things. Going to the beach - if it was Maracas we'd be sure to eat Shark & Bake. There would be signage for Carib Beer on the huts/stands of course.

Also: I am craving lobster. And Shark and Bake. And Doubles.

First the city for those formative years, bricks and bodegas.

Then the ocean, we have lobsters too.

i just got back from ocean city today. friends of mine own a house down there on 41st street, that they rent out essentially most of the year now. we stayed in the basement and had renters and families from pennsylvania giving us wary looks and vague threats about calling the police. people with money on vacation give off a weird vibe that i don't think i noticed before. i can only imagine some of the tribulations of growing up there.
it is a lovely town though.

“The Potteries”, Stoke-on-Trent, England - home of Wedgwood and Spode.
The distinctive buildings are bottle-kilns, everything was made of red brick.
Scenes like this had largely disappeared when I was a boy though I remember not being able to see across the road due to the thick smog and straining to identify the right bus to take to school.
