BARN OWLS
A couple barn owls visited us this evening. Lounged in the trees. Huge, magnificent.

I love these birds and their soundless flight. One illogically thinks that a big bird´s body, would have to make more of a noise.
A pair of owls used to live in the old oak tree at our summer cottage in Sweden and scare us through almost touching our hair at diving at us kids when we went outside at nights. At our last visit to Wilbur´s parental home an owl couple sat in a niche in the wall resting their bones from their long charter flight south. They looked like kabuki theatre actors through the looking glass and like two giant skulls, without. Owl wife leaned on owl husband, tired and fell asleep like a log.

You're right, they're beautiful. I once had a mounted specimen, a cross between the light and dark-breasted forms, its Latin name sounded like a mantra; Tyto alba mi-guttata... Tyto alba mi-guttata...

There's a pair that raises a brood in a nook in our roof every year. They seem to feed primarily on gophers and pack rats in our area--there's a mound of bones, skulls and pellets below their nesting site.

You've heard that dragon-cry they make--have you also heard the repetitive ticking sound the adults make while they're hunting? Or the sound the chicks make when they're hungry? It sounds like someone scraping ice from a windshield.

They all fall dead silent if a great horned owl starts hooting nearby.
