THE ROSE CALLAHAN TREATMENT

Ace photographer and all-around cutie pie Rose Callahan came down from Brooklyn recently with her dapper, strapping beau Kelly to take a few pictures. That's right: I got The Rose Callahan treatment. And you know what? I loved it.

Rose was sweet and generous enough to allow me to share these photos with you, so please won't you give her some fame and fortune, already.

(Note: All images © Rose Callahan. All Rights reserved, so please don't take any undue liberties. She's good people. You'd like her.)

I'm deep, I tell you!

House Whimsical:

Hats off to Rose for making such marvelous images in the face of impossible odds!

~W

These are wonderful, especially the magnifying gadget one. I am very jealous of your record player. I'm in the market for one right now.

I've been really keen on one of these:

I like the form of the brass horn, but I fully realize it's far too obvious.

Stuff n' nonsense. My beau is more or less exactly your age, and he's a well-made and youthful-looking fellow too. I've learned to recognize the look. :)

From Ubuweb:

Rose Hobart premiered in December, 1936 at the Julian Levy Gallery. Cornell included it in a matinee program of short films from his collection, which Levy titled “Goofy Newsreels.” The first Surrealist exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art was about to open, and many of the artists were in town, including Salvador Dali, who attended Cornell's film program. During the screening of Rose Hobart, Dali became extremely agitated. Halfway through the film he began shouting "Salaud!" — bastard — and overturned the projector. Reportedly, Dali ruefully explained his actions to Levy, "My idea for a film is exactly that, and I was going to propose it to someone who would pay to have it made…. I never wrote it or told anyone, but it is as if he had stolen it (Solomon 89).” Some prefer an apocryphal — but far more poetic — explanation also attributed to Dali: “He stole it from my subconscious.”

The lighting in these photographs is lovely. Is that accurate to what you what you see in person? It looks like several of the photos took advantage of some of the natural lighting, and the lighting fixtures in your home. Did she have to supplement with anything beyond a camera flash?

If I may ask, what's your laundering philosophy? Clearly, methods differ depending on the item, but I have grown increasingly skeptical of the admonition to "dry clean only." On the other hand, hand-washing and pressing a suit is an enormous pain. I thus grew curious to know your thoughts.

I hand wash and iron all of my bespoke shirts. It's a chore, but the alternative is too expensive and potentially harmful to my clothes. Hand washing extends the lifespan of my shirts dramatically.

I have my suits dry cleaned, but I try to keep it to a minimum. Dry cleaning is hard on clothes.

I particularly enjoy the color matching of the tie with the socks. I will definitely be thinking about that in future. wearing only black or white shocks is getting tiresome. Also your Whimsical musing poses are excellent.

I keep thinking Patrick McDonald is going to pop up from behind the couch in the first image. It rings similarly to his style, no? These are wonderful and the color is so rich!

The way the light illuminates the seashell from behind is amazing. It's transformed into a tiny sun, radiating sunbeams and all.
