Beautiful! If I were a fly I'd be much too tempted by those things.

I used to have pet flytraps myself, but my roommate at the time was a notorious drunkard and accidentally kicked them off the balcony one night.

sensual traps, these.

do you periodically take the top off to treat them to an errant insect?

I take the top off in the mornings to allow for healthy ventilation and to allow the condensation to evaporate a bit, but not really for insects. Gnats are too small to trip the hairs on the inside of the leaves, and flies don't really get into the house that much. On sunny days I put it out in the sun with the top off, and they occasionally get lucky.

They are a seasonal plant, being native to the Carolinas. They require a winter dormancy period, or they eventually lose vigor and die of exhaustion.

I usually put them out in the bog to overwinter--about half usually survive, depending on how mild the season turns out. Most survived this year.

It's important to consider that when assembling a terrarium. Coffee filters help to keep the stratum in place.

I have just received my own fly trap seeds, I hope they come out as nicely as those.

They take a few years to get that big, so be patient!
