ON ORGANIC MECHANICS
[info]ladykalessia introduced me to this wonderful video on Firefly Letterpress. The tone is a bit pious and worthy in parts, but the sheer beauty of the old technology draws you in, as it always does when I visit friends who use letterpress. As a graphic designer and a lover of typography, it's hard not to be engrossed in the craft of composing type in such a tactile way.

To me, this video reinforces my personal notion that ultimately it's the inherent qualities found in older things that compel us to cling to them, not nostalgia: Texture, not time. What's truly compelling to me about these old presses isn't the historical aspects, but their nourishing, humane aesthetics: the ritual, the dimensionality of the imprint, the sounds and sculptural beauty of the 'organic' mechanisms.

Speaking of organic mechanics brings to mind another fellow: David Metz's bicycle museum is a treasure for this very reason, as he is not just a preeminent bicycle collector. He's also amassed a large collection of curious mechanical household utensils of astounding intricacy and ingenuity: cherry pitters, toasters, etc. He's also obsessed with collecting and building unusual and strangely elegant mousetraps--the simpler and more ingenious, the better.

But of course this is all but half of the equation: I'd like to see elegant technology that complements our own bodies to continue with us into the future, as we'll need energy-saving solutions like these again. It would be nice to see a world in which we are able to dance with our machines, and thus set the pace.

Just a thought.

"texture, not time" is a good little line... I try often to explain why printmaking is so appealing to me in the age of digital everything.

I sent this video to my mother the other week. it's beautiful, isn't it?

I met Andy Paiko at a craft show in Baltimore today, and he was so pleased that I found him through you. he quite enjoyed your 'mammal of paradise' moniker. thank you for introducing me to such a wonderful artist through your website! you pique my curiosity every day, about one thing or another.

I was hoping to make my way down to Baltimore to meet Mr. Paiko, as I love his work. Sadly, family commitments and studio obligations kept me from doing so.

My partner's ([info]smoothtom, Adam) grandfather was an undertaker and ran a successful funeral home in central Pennsylvania. In such a remote area, printers were few and far between, so the funeral home invested in its own printing press, which took up a whole 15x15 room in the back of the funeral home. Adam's uncle took over the business and ran it into the ground (pun always intended), resulting in the building being foreclosed upon. Adam's family isn't sure what happened to the press or the lead type, but they suspect his uncle still has it, probably rotting away somewhere. What we wouldn't give to have that beautiful piece of machinery!

Wow--sounds like proto-desktop publishing.

We talk about designing human-scale machines all the time around here. I hope the boys grow up and make some.

I had similar thoughts in mind when I finally obtained a manual coffee grinder.

What you say about the textile qualities is entirely true -- in this case, the ritual of feeling the beans being crushed through the wheel.

We tend to make jams and preserves in the summer and have been amassing what I hope will amount to an arsenal of hand-powered fruit and nut processing equipment.

I'm becoming concerned about all this clean living you've been doing, D. Have you thought about raising game cocks, or perhaps starting up a still?

It's all my lady's fault, I swear it. She's tainted my proud suburbanite blood with endless hikes, fruit preserves, woodsmoke, and... flannel. Yee.

(Although, I am thinking about raising chickens in the back yard...)
