VELVET AND TARTAN: FAR FROM SPARTAN

The past week and a half has seen me brought down by flu, our beloved cat on the brink of dying, and a crippling, excruciating bout of what appears to be arthritis in both knees (more on this later). So let's go back to a simpler, more carefree time: the week before last. Ah, those were the halcyon days of tartans and velvet!

Here I am in the new midnight blue velvet jacket made for me by Duchess Clothier, and wearing my bespoke blackwatch tartan Holland & Sherry wool trousers made for me by Lord Willy's. Pale lavender shirt by my favorite shirtmaker, Simone Abbarchi of Florence.

I can't complain, really--I've only received glancing blows from Old Man Flu over the past two years, so I was due for a good solid wallop.

I do think having to tend to my plants forced me from bed most days--and I discovered my watering can makes for a good neti pot in a pinch, so progress was made on some unexpected fronts.

I do hope your cat is on the mend?

May the flu and other such odious ailments begone!

Is that Audubon's Carolina Parrot on the wall behind you in all your midnight blue velvet glory?

Miss Calico is okay after all? I felt sad for you all weekend!

Yes, indeed. I've seen a stuffed specimen once. Brought me to tears, as I love psitticines.

Well, she's had a temporary reprieve, but the end is near and quite inevitable. So sorry to upset you!

I love that print. Perhaps my favorite of the series despite the tragic, cautionary tale attached to it.

Poor kitty... and my sympathies to you and your wife. My dog is 14 and, although in excellent health, I'm already a wreck. Life is short. Live it well, preferably in velvet.

I'll annoy you by quoting myself: "Life is short--an occasion, so one may as well dress for it."

Long life to your canine companion (We're a bit blue around the house tonight).

I am having trouble thinking off the top of my head of anything smarter than a well-cut dark velvet jacket.

A well-cut dark velvet jacket with a lint roller close at hand?

The clothes are wonderful, as always, but I'm also quite fascinated with the room in which you're posing. Is that your home? If so, it's incredible! I have a sofa very much like that and in a similar colour. Sadly, mine has seen better days...

Well done, as always.

Oh yes, this is home. The sofa is a bit of an extravagance: we had it made. We wanted something that looked like an archetypal couch right out of the dictionary--classic in its lines, but pop in its color and condition. Think of the art direction for those 50's-60's musicals like My Fair Lady, Meet Me in St. Louis, or Gigi, then throw in some naturalist wonder cabinet elements and a wall of plants in the bay window. It may look grand in the photos, but it's quite modest and prim in person. The effect is meant to be a little humorous, in that these grandiose parlor gestures are in a small postwar cape cod.

If you go here, you will see a graphic that says "Mein Haus". This is a video of our house that a film company did last summer. We've done much more since, but you'll see other parts of the house.
