BLUE (VELVET) MONDAY

P and I spent last evening in Manhattan with friends Tom, Thomas, Jackie and Fairy Clothmothers Seyta and Ellen of Duchess, who are in town this week to service their East Coast clientele. Last night, they bestowed upon me an incredible gift: this eminently louche midnight blue velvet suit--something I have dreamed of owning for years. I immediately took it out on the town, and strolled throughout the chilly East Village without so much as a shiver--bloody things things are cozy! You don't even feel like you're wearing something so restrictive as a suit. Needless to say I'm over the moon; I might sleep in it tonight...

Cloth-covered buttons, flapless pockets, bright paprika liner!

Ladies: did I mention they are now doing suits for you as well? I saw a couple velvet three-pieces with the most playful liner patterns--florals, etc. You really should look into them.

Rockers: they are also doing skin-tight denim three-piece suits as well (one of which you may see on television soon, I'm told). If you're gonna sterilize yourself by way of tight, hot nethers, this is the way to go. Good fun!

And of course, they are still making lovely, dignified duds for down-to-earth dudes: nice, subdued pinstripes, classic cuts, and a minimum-risk fit.

The Duchess gals will be at The Gershwin all week. Thank you, Seyta and Ellen!

Love,
W

Oh, curses. I want a three-piece velvet suit so very very badly. Now I feel sad.

Of course, now I have to remind myself that I'm saving money for Italy.

The suits on the website are still very tempting.

How coincidental - I was reading about Satie and his Velvet Gentleman phase last night and thinking, "Ah, I'd like to have a phase of that!"

After he died, they found seven velvet suits in his closet. Never had anyone over his apartment, I recall. Also had a large deck of small cards upon which he drew buildings, I think. Am I close?

Yes, but he also wore these suits in public, after he stopped dressing in a "priestly" fashion and coming across some money from his writings. One thing they did not expect to see though was his unending collection of umbrellas, most of which were never used.

I must let out a sigh. It is a magnificent suit. Sadly, since I am on the more figured side I think would only look strange in such an ensemble. The trousers would be crushed instantly, I could never sit down. I could also be wrong.

But your suit reminds me that I need to inquire on the status of a green velvet smoking jacket I ordered some time ago. the tailor has yet to call me about looking at swatches. Thankfully, the more I wait, and the more I exercise, with luck the smaller my measurements may be.

On an unrelated note, I was looking at some vintage items and started think about piping as a detail, your thoughts.

Green smoking jacket? Nice. Shawl lapels? You need trousers in a dark black-blue plaid to go with it.

Piping? Don't have much experience with it, but I've seen it done well in a monochromatic manner (black wool jacket/black satin piping). I doubt going a la The Prisoner would be a very wise move, but there are always exceptions.

I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed, or numbered! My piping is my own.

(Many apologies to Mr McGoohan.)

The lapels went without saying. I was considering some fine silver piping, but probably not going to go for it. I'll definite post pics when the jacket is finished.

Also, one of my favorite series. Lots of colour...sign, they don't make television like they used to.

I will. Last night was not intended to be the outing it became--kept running into people we knew by chance. Haven't been in the city since last we saw you, actually.

Such a lovely blossom, for sure!

Speaking of which, have you seen Keita Kawasaki's work? Beware the site--music pops out in an alarming fashion in the most unsuspecting times. I kinda like it!

My own midnight blue velvet suit was fine to sleep in. I love the choice of shirt and accessories, by the way.

Oh, no harm done, I'd say--the more love spread around, the better!

(Haven't talked to Cator in a while. Wonder how he's doing...probably just fabulously, knowing him!)
