ORCHIDS AND APES

The paphiopedilums I bought when I visited Waldor Orchids a couple weeks ago have been blooming. Interesting how the bulbous slipper drops down from amid the folded sepals like its name ("orchis"= testicle) implies. Thrilled to have them thriving in their little glass world. The tight arrangement, fluorescent light, river stones and water seem to help create a humid, cool microclimate for them.

There's a story about this wee fellow, but I'll leave that for another time.

A happy and healthy new year to all of you, my friends. May you all have your fill at the wells of joy, light and love.

With warmest wishes,
W

Beautiful. Makes me wish I didn't live in such a dry place.

I suspect that 'orchis' refers to the scrotal appearance of the tubers - although, of course, flowers are genitalia in their own right.
Whatever the etymology your orchids are absolutely beautiful!

I love it!

I hate New Years resolutions, but a real easy one I'm going to keep is this:

I'm going to buy a bunch of plants from a decent botanist and I'm going to do my damnest to keep them alive. No more endless care for sick and dying plants, but endless care for living plants!
