OUT FOR A BIT
Been spending my holiday week in Philly, perambulating between Bar Ferdinand, Beau Monde and Southwark. Then I return home and check on my orchids' progress, then sleep the sleep of the quietly inebriated. Best holiday season in recent memory, really. Hope you're having the same.

Any haunts you especially enjoy?

A creperie! I'd love if one opened here! The haunts I loved the best are gone now.

In Tempe, by Arizona State University, a used bookstore called Changing Hands, with an upstairs dedicated to religion and spirituality, a meandering main floor with nooks and crannies, dedicated to fiction and adventure, and a basement, filled with art, photography, and architecture. Its back door opened into a wonderful courtyard, with waterfall features and a gazebo.

Also in Tempe, a 24-hour diner called Mae West. It had the classiest omelets (the Tiffany, with asparagus and shrimp), beer, and truckers. Thankfully, its sister site remains--Harlowe's.

There was also a 24-hour coffee shop, built in what was once a bank; you could study and enjoy latte in the old vault. It was called the Gold Bar. After many years there, the owner decided to not renew the lease and let his son open his own coffee shop--not nearly as charming.

Intriguing, enchanting haunts seem hard to come by these days, but I'm also more prone to stay in.

W,

When I am in downtown Philly, I tend to gravitate to Moriarty's on Walnut St for dining. Then down into Old City to Buffalo Billiards for drinks, conversation and a game of darts. When I am larking about in my neighborhood of Manayunk, I make my rounds from neighborhood places like the Old Eagle Tavern to Main St. personalities such as the Flat Rock Saloon.

Hope your solstice-time have been magnificent.

Isn't Moriarty's on the same block as Caribou Cafe?

Yes, Moriarty's is about 50 ft away, next door to the Forrest Theater. When my friends and I go there, we even have a server who regularly waits on us. Splendid fellow.
I am often told I'd have a good time at Caribou Cafe. I believe I only avoid the place because it feels more natural to go there with a companion; alas I find myself more and more solitary these days.

Beau Monde really is amazing, and shockingly affordable. Sabrina's, in the Italian Market, is my favourite for breakfast.

Ha! Way to steal my exact comment. However, there's nothing quite like a night of unbridled ribaldry and a shameful, hungover breakfast at Sabrina's.

My friend Molly has a book shop down there. I should try Sabrina's sometime. I keep hearing good things.

Did you mean to inquire about haunts in Philadelphia or in general? Here in Detroit, Cliff Bells, a beautiful bar restored to its original 1930's splendour is a favourite of mine: http://www.cliffbells.com/index.html
