Modern, but not too modern

Very nice graphic. A worthy successor to the old time type they use nowadays. I get the feel of the 1920s art scene with an extra 'Je ne sais quoi'. I make me think of Hercule Poirot for some reason. You have outdone yourself, W. Is the type face of your own invention?

I started with an Emigre font known as Mason Sans. I've made my own modifications in certain characters to tone things down and to increase legibility at smaller sizes. Obviously, I modified the "R" the most.

I wanted something that was fresh, crisp, and modern, but as you've surmised I wanted letterforms that hinted at the period during which Dr. Rosenbach was most active, which was roughly between 1910-1940. Hence, the arts & crafts/art deco/early modern feel. I also wanted something that generally alluded to the works found in the collection.

The finial at the end of the logo can be removed and used as a callout element elsewhere in the layout.

Wonderful work, goes so well with the ironwork featured in the museum (my favorite place in all of Philadelphia).

Tried to allude to that as well, yes.

Yes, the Samuel Yellin collection is great. I particularly love the bed frame.

(not a picture of the bed frame, but cool stuff anyway)

It's beautiful and I see exactly what you were going for! Now I have to actually visit the museum.

This is an excellent logo. The only thing that slightly bothers me is the "The." I'm not sure if it is the scale, the spacing, or its level proximity with the "R", but it just looks a little out of proportion with the rest of the logo as a whole. Apart from that, I really like the "R", the arched, Lancet-like "A" and the ornamental sign (which someone alluded to the library structure itself; neat).

The "The" is a slight concession, given that it must read at smaller sizes than shown here.

I see what you mean about the 'The'. Because I recognize that quandary so well, now I am wondering how many hours [info]lord_whimy sat before the computer screen, fist nudging it up to the cap line, then down to the x-height, up again to the interior edge of the bowl of the R, then back up to the cap line. Oh, grr.

It's done and approved and isn't even my project, so I oughtn't to be worrying about it . . .

Haha. Yeah. It speaks to the wonders of tweaking pixels and encountering typographical obsessions in play.

Well, at the moment it serves as a kind of serif, so as not to cause too much visual dissonance. The current thinking is to keep it, but that may change in the future once practical application bears out its true necessity. We'll see!
