SOFT FOCUS

Soft Focus is a new online video series on VBS.TV (not a big fan of its parent company Vice, but that's another story). Over several episodes, Ian Svenonius interviews musicians like Will Oldham, Ian Mackaye, Chan Marshall, Henry Rollins, Genesis P. Orridge, and Andrew WK. Soft Focus is shot on location at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Both interesting and entertaining, and equal parts tongue-in-cheek and sincere. Go have a look, then report to this post.

So LJers: who would you interview on your talk show? (I'm thinking of posting video interviews myself, so I'm open to suggestions.)

Straight off the top of my head: you, Nathaniel Branden, Virginia Postrel, Hakim Bey, Neal Stephenson and Peter Christopherson. Not necessarily in that order.

This person knows me too well: this is most of ipod lineup.

I guess I don't need to have my own talk show.

Rollins came off rather well, yes. Probably the best interview of him I've seen. I thought Andrew WK was not only thoughtful but endearingly sincere. I'm not a fan of his music, but this ideas are engaging. Will Oldham was rather dull, but both old guard icons Ian McKaye and Genesis P'Orridge certainly lived up to the task.

I'd like to hear the story of why you aren't a big Vice fan.

Vice is of, by, and for middle-aged adolescents. I prefer Cabinet--a magazine of, by, and for middle-aged nerds.

I'm very impressed by Ian Svenonius's ability to bring out interesting subjects in these artists. This is really quality TV and I thank you for the tip.

So, who would you interview on your talk show?
Noam Chomsky.
