MICHELLE MCCOSKEY'S WONDERFUL WEAVES
![]() A friend sent this Daily Candy link along the other day, which featured a crochet squid scarf--a strange undersea creature rendered in a soft, snug material. What's not to love? Then it struck me that I know the person who made this wonderfully playful thing... Michelle McCocskey makes each of her pieces by hand and takes custom orders--no species seems beyond her needles (I'm dying for someone to have crochet mittens made in the form of prehistoric trilobites or even a hat in the form of a microscopic volvox. Perhaps a scarf in the form of a sarracenia or nepenthes! She was once kind enough to make one for me as a gift, which given the time and trouble that entails, was extremely generous. I remain in her debt, so it's a pleasure to trumpet her talent to you. Go here to peruse her crochet scarves, and perhaps even discuss a custom piece. They're absolutely wonderful. ~W |

THANK YOU, GLENN
I was surprised to find that Glenn O'Brien had recently written a very kind post about me on his entertaining and informative Style Guy 'blogue' (the alternate spelling is Glenn's suggestion, and a fine one at that). Quoth Le Glenn:... "As someone who has spent a small fortune (by today's standards) on gardening, I have been particularly inspired by the horticultural notes he posts regularly. Actually, he's a big fauna fan too, and his postings give us a sort of underground Discovery Channel." ... "One might take Whimsy (who would seem to be named Victor Allen Crawford III, he who holds the Lord's copyrights) for a retro personality, but that would be simplistic. This is a man who is not loathe to praise the works of mid-century modern designers like Tommy Parzinger and Finn Juhl or demonstrate an exquisite eye for mid-century ceramics." ... "Is Whimsy a Provincial? Well, he seems to live in New Jersey, near the City of Brotherly Love, which is where he appears to maintain a bastion of civilization against the assaults of vulgarities local, national, and international. I say wherever a fellow like this locates himself, that is a capital." ... All of which is quite an honor, coming from a gentleman of such pedigree and accomplishments: Glenn O'Brien began his career as editor of Andy Warhol's Interview and his column Glenn O'Brien's BEAT made him a prominent figure of the New Wave scene in New York. Together with Blondie founder Chris Stein, Glenn hosted the legendary punk-era "sub-realist" New York cable access show TV Party, which has been regarded as an invaluable document of the downtown New York scene of the late 70s: The Clash, Nile Rodgers, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Bryne and Arto Lindsay were regular guests (I recall David McDermott making a memorable appearance once with his gloriously antic "Homosexual Minute"). Glenn also wrote and produced the film Downtown 81 starring Jean-Michel Basquiat. Since the 80s he has created many famous advertising campaigns and commercials, and had a hand in creating Madonna's controversial book, Sex. He's an author, poet, essayist and a regular columnist for GQ, Vanity Fair Italia and Paper Magazine. He edits the literary magazine Bald Ego and recently completed a novel. In short, Glenn exemplifies what one might call 'groovy refinement'. My kind of fellow. You're most welcome to drop a line, Glenn. (Unfortunately, I don't have 'people'--just a wife, cat and plants.) Perhaps we might search for that old cabin Patti Smith was born in? Your friend in b(l)ogs, |
