BOG GARDEN UPDATE

The bog garden is coming along well so far. I finally have the stone in place--a Sisyphean task. It's like solving a three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle with 30-pound pieces.

The plot is on an incline, so I used a level to make sure the pond molds were properly installed. Holes have been drilled into the sides to ensure partial drainage, so that the peat is aerated on occasion. A bottom layer of sand has been dumped in to be sure it stays in situ, awaiting dirt fill for the space between the liner and stone, and a peat/sand mix for the bog itself. I plan to have a larger bed surrounding the stone enclosure to help visually ground it, possibly with Irish moss surrounding the lip of the bog. Not entirely sure how the elevation is going to work, but there will be a variety of elevations for certain species (Venus flytraps don't like to be as waterlogged as trumpet pitchers, for instance).

In time I plan to incorporate the bog into the stone terracing I'll be laying down to lessen the slope in the back yard. The back of the yard is at a higher elevation than the front, and also enjoys a good deal of shade from three large oaks. Moss is already established, so a shade garden/moss garden might be in the offing. The lower area nearer the house will have a pergola, arbor, and several flowerbeds. At least that's the plan thus far.

KI-LIN

For an upcoming exhibit at AMNH. Used to draw heraldic devices when I was a boy; had quite a few family arms committed to memory.

Fulfilled a boyhood desire to visit the Royal College of Arms a few years ago. I was treated tersely as noblemen's footmen came and went. Saw all I cared to see. Never went back.

Anyway, you should see the Barong and Bunyip. Bring a nephew when the exhibit opens this summer.
