"WHIMSY'S CRIBS" VISITS QUEENS

Yesterday, friends James and Laila invited Lady P and I out to their second story parlor in deepest Queens. They had just returned from Paris with a treasure trove of champagnes, truffles and apocryphal tales. We were soon joined by our friend Evan in the sun room for a small revel in honor of James' birthday. The afternoon-cum-evening was rife with cheeses from Murray's, raspberries that exploded on the tongue, and improbably sweet champagne biscuits that make champagne roil with bubbles (This fact was confirmed scientifically, as we tested four bottles of champagne in an effort to confirm our data, at which point were were satisfied with our findings). We clowned, laughed and lounged among the plants and beauties as the setting sun gave a rosy glow over the room.

Later in the evening, we rifled through James' collection of vintage toiletries and naughty postcards, and briefly discussed a spread for Swindle that I'd like James to participate in. Friend Jeff joined us after a day-long shoot in Chelsea for L'Uomo Vogue. We then dined on Laila's delicious quiche and celebrated James' birthday with an incredible mousse cake that had a glaze not unlike a creme brulee. Our thanks to James and Laila for their hospitality and generosity!

The contrast between their immediate surroundings and their little oasis is jarring to the point of being surreal. The very fact that someone like James can live in that particular neighborhood without daily harm coming to him suggests that the mob still has influence in the area.

I see that J & L finally got evan out to queens! Good show. It looks like a grand apt, and I am sorry to have missed the fete. I trust that it was for the best--why further divide the champagne?

Yes, Evan had to leave early to catch her ride out of the city. It's easy to find, but pretty far out--it takes forty minutes on the A local to get back to Manhattan.

Very lovely. Though they need more carpets and drapes.

Oh, they took the heavy stuff down. Summer's coming--and that means something in Queens, I can tell you!

Yes, I suppose. Although that's why my nan kept the drapes closed in summer- keep herself pale.

Fabulous apartment. I have never quite got the hang of possessions, in my home they fail to be charming memorabilia and just become clutter (it's like the reverse of the Midas Touch)!

My own home of more of a naturalist's outpost/art studio/research den, with plants and little curiosities everywhere. And a lot of books.

Rooms stuffed with plants and trinkets always seem somewhat magical / surreal to me.

I can appreciate a light, spare aesthetic sense, but I do adore rooms that feel like grottoes, especially ones that feel like terrariums. I feel so ensconced in them--nuzzled, even. Brings out the salamander in me.

Dear Sir,

After perusing your journal and concluding that you are irresistible, etiquette demands that I notify you of immanent inclusion on my "friends" roster.

Yrs,
Herr Drosselmeyer

This is a ghastly suggestion, but these friends of yours might supplement their income by subletting the sitting room for use by would-be readers who have heretofore been stymied in locating a suitable place to sink into their books.

It could work. They could even stock a handful of outlandish (yet tasteful!) blazer jackets and ties for those inevitable guests who would show up in unsuitable attire.

Or they could remove their blazers and ties, and massage them. A clothing massage--how invigorating!

All these suggestions and compliments about my humble abode leave me positively blushing, which is no simple feat. Whimsy dearest, I must inform you that between yourself and James you consumed the better part of five bottles, actually...(I swear I only had a sip)
A marvelous time had by all & our pleasure entirely. We must make plans for a future fete. I shall defer to you men with regards to such details.

What an inspiration! What a lucky man you are to have such refined, cultivated, and attractive friends. It makes me want to move to Queens, I think?
